Sigal Collection Volume 1

Instruments of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and more

The Story

We teamed up with the Sigal Music Museum, a renowned institution in Greenville, South Carolina, celebrated for its remarkable collection of some of the world's rarest and most cherished keyboard instruments. Our journey began with recording a select few of their most storied keyboards. Over the course of two years, we meticulously captured the essence of six instruments for Volume 1. Our goal was to make these rare treasures accessible, so you can experience their beauty from the comfort of home.

This collection is a true treasure chest of historical keyboards, featuring three pianos, two harpsichords, and a clavichord—each with a rich and fascinating history. Highlights include a Broadwood & Sons piano famously played by Frédéric Chopin and an ornate harpsichord once owned by Queen Charlotte, graced by the hands of Mozart himself.

These instruments are not only perfect for period music but also offer unique tonal qualities that inspire creative scoring. The Stein piano, for example, delivers a captivating, subtly "almost piano" sound, while the 1815 Walter piano, equipped with four pedals, showcases remarkable versatility. Its rare bassoon pedal adds a buzzy, prepared-piano effect, while the moderator pedal introduces a felt layer over the strings, producing a warm, cinematic tone ideal for intimate passages.

Broadwood & Sons Grand Piano, 1845

When Chopin was forced to flee France and take refuge in England in the spring of 1848, he accepted the offer to use what was then the largest grand piano made by Broadwood & Sons. Before he embarked on the official tour, Chopin earned £20 per appearance for morning recitals at the homes of wealthy patrons. This piano, identical in style to the ones provided to Chopin for touring, was at the home of William Amory. Bought in December of 1845, this was the piano available to Chopin when he was employed for the morning by Mrs. Amory in May of 1848. The story was told and retold within the family, and finally condensed into a recollection of the grumblings that William made on paying the outrageous sum of 20£ for a musician!

Walter & Son Piano, 1815

Gabriel Anton Walter (1752–1826) was a piano maker who also built harpsichords and organs. Walter arrived in Vienna before 1780, and on January 27, 1780, he married Anna Elisabeth Reisinger, the widow of the organ maker Franz Schöffstoß. In April 1791, Walter was listed as both burgher and organ maker. By 1800, his firm became known as Anton Walter und Sohn, reflecting his partnership with his stepson Joseph Schöffstoß. Walter retired around 1820 and, at the time of his death from cholera, was living with his sister Theresia and his brother, the piano maker Joseph Walter. As one of Vienna's most famous makers, Anton Walter could boast that he had twenty apprentices working under him at his peak.

Kirkman Harpsichord, 1761

According to Sheridan Germann, "No more magnificent British harpsichord survives than this 1761 Jacob Kirkman, which was formerly Queen Charlotte's (the wedding present from King George III), and was probably played by the nine-year-old Mozart for the royal family at Buckingham House in 1764." This is indeed one of the finest-sounding English harpsichords in existence and is certainly among the loveliest visually. In the keywell and interior is a marquetry veneer of dark figures on a light background, which features eagles, angels playing trumpets, scrolling foliage, and a trophy of various musical instruments. The borders feature decorative dark banding with pale squares made of laburnum wood with the heart- and sapwood both showing.

Stein Grand Piano, 1784

Johann Stein is one of the most significant figures in piano-building history, celebrated for his groundbreaking "Viennese Action," developed in the 1770s. Departing from the traditions of Cristofori and Silbermann, Stein created a lightweight, reliable, and responsive action that quickly became the standard for German and Viennese builders. Mozart famously praised the qualities of Stein’s pianos, even writing letters to his father expressing his desire to own one. This particular instrument, an inspiration for countless replicas made by Zuckermann and Hubbard, features a walnut veneer embossed with brass-colored medallions, tapered fluted legs, and an original spruce soundboard. The ornate decoration, unusual for Stein’s typically modest designs, suggests it may have been added at a later date.
